CLASSICAL

University of Chicago - music degree with special honors awarded for thesis using mathematical group theory to connect Balinese and West African polyrhythms to Western harmony and tuning systems.  Studied composition with Andrew Imbrie, Jay Alan Yim and Easley Blackwood; theory with Richard Cohn; musicology with Charles Rosen and Howard Mayer Brown; ethnomusicology with Philip Bohlmann.  Regularly performs in top Bay Area early music ensembles.

ROCK/ELECTRONIC

Started first rock band at age 11, covering the Ventures and the entire AC/DC Back In Black album. Took his Gibson SG to Chicago and started a death metal band called Centaur. Discovered Kraftwerk and vintage synthesizers, which he used to found Applesaucer, an SF indie staple which garnered a “Most Outstanding” nomination at the California Music Awards for its debut effort on Toadophile Records.

JAZZ

Composing and arranging for the Manhattan Brass and local great, Rick Walsh.  Big band compositions featured in national Sprint campaigns as well as feature length documentaries.

WORLD

Through Studio CLA has overseen the largest archive of vanishing music ever created in Southeast Asia.  Regularly performs with the region’s greatest living masters.  Invented the Gong Thom Plouer (pictured above) in collaboration with Him Sophy, Cambodia’s greatest living composer. 

STAGE

As Music Director, Music Supervisor, Conductor, Composer and Arranger, worked with many of Broadway and Opera’s finest creatives including director Robert McQueen, choreographer Seán Curran, producer Fred Frumberg and librettist Catherine Filloux.
